Sir Edmund said “I think it is a mistake for a man of unstable temperament to marry, don’t you?” Lizzie replied “To marry a timid lady, yes. Good gracious, is this the reason you espouse misogamy? Don’t be such a gudgeon, Edmund. Find someone who is not afraid of your blustering, arm her with a stout club and marry her.” Or they could hunt for her missing diamond necklace and just pretend to be engaged… Regency Romance by Joan Smith; originally published by Fawcett
Reluctant Bride edition by Joan Smith Romance eBooks
The heroine Lizzie is a shrew when angry. The Hero Edmund is an irascible gentleman who is impatient and irritable. They meet when his racing equipage runs into her carriage on the road and causes it to fall into a ditch. Lizzie is travelling to her uncle's estate to sell him a valuable antique necklace (part of her dowery) in order to save her brother's farm. With much grumbling and bad grace, Edmund rescues her and her aunt and deposits them in a nearby inn. It is there that Lizzie discovers the necklace is gone! The remainder of this book chronicles the three people chasing about the countryside and London looking for the thief, with Edmund and Lizzie sniping at each other and the aunt acting as an exasperated referee. This is quite funny as these two confirmed misogamists, Edmund and Lizzie, gradually decide that marraige, at least marriage to each other, might not be too bad after all.Product details

Reluctant Bride edition by Joan Smith Romance eBooks Reviews
I bought this because I have read other Joan Smith regency novels and thoroughly enjoyed them; I especially enjoy her conversations, which are witty and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny. This may have been an early writing of hers, but I didn't bother to finish it, as it was banal and uninteresting.
I really enjoyed this book. The plot took many twists and turns which I found very enjoyable. Light on the details of the romance which is always pleasant. Would read again!
Fun little caper a wrecked carriage, a stolen necklace, a sham engagement, and a happy ending for all. This is the kind of story to read on a cold, dark afternoon.
I am so glad that I found this book by Joan Smith. If you love her strong and flawed characters you will love this one. When I had completed the book I felt to start again. One seldom feels like that when reading. I strongly urge any JS fans to get Reluctant Bride. You won't be sorry.
This has to be one of my favorite Joan Smith's. The plot is a little far fetched and convoluted but the repartee between the hero and the heroine more than makes up for it. The heroine's spot on observations had me laughing out loud. A fun, quick read.
Anger, meanness, sarcasm, crabbiness, insensitivity; these are not appealing attributes in a "hero." He caused a carriage accident which injured two people, secretly gave away the fair lady's dog, continued to dominate all actions and generally was hugely unpleasant to most everyone. It ruined any possible interest I had in this story.
Technically the storyline felt choppy and unreasonable. The characters were poorly developed and the plot was not well constructed. Ms Smith is a prolific author which results in frequent hits and many misses. This is a miss.
This was a very tidy story and an excellent regency. It is a traveling novel involving a jewel theft. I chose the word unsettling for the title of this review because this story is outside my normal Ken. It is unlike any other regency I have read. The Hero is very obscure. He is also vain, churlish, and not above man-handling everyone around him. I was very unsure if he was worthy of the heroine at first because she is everything that is excellent in a Regency heroine. She has a tongue on her, but I like that in my heroines especially if the Hero is churlish. She gave back better than she got on most occasions and even I began pitying the hero when he kept running into cyprians at inns. This book was very amusing at times. I might have felt better if it hadn't been written in first person by the heroine. I never got a good feel for the Hero, he would certainly been more clear if I had been treated to his mind voice. Still a solid travel story complete with tidy HEA. Highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.
